Anxiety and Depression Therapy

It’s normal to feel upset, worried or down at times. But sometimes these feelings can become overwhelming and take the form of what we commonly refer to as anxiety or depression. Talking with a therapist about these feelings can help you better understand these mood states and increase your capacity to manage feelings of anxiety and depression.

One of the aims of therapy will be to explore how your anxiety and depression impact your daily functioning at home, at work or school, and in relationships. Another aim will be to explore the triggers for these feelings as a means for identifying patterns and possible underlying factors for your negative mood states. Since it is difficult to directly change our emotions, our work will often instead focus on helping you identify the thoughts and behaviors contributing to your negative feelings so that we can focus on intervening in those areas. The idea is that challenging our negative thoughts with more adaptive ones leads us to feel better, which in turn contributes to more adaptive behavior, which in turn leads to more positive thoughts about oneself. Similarly, changing our maladaptive behavior can lead us to think more positively of ourselves and in turn, we feel better about ourselves. Easier said than done. In therapy I will help you engage with this process of understanding and challenging your mood states and help you to develop coping skills to enhance daily living.
